The standards of cardiovascular surgery are not set in individual clinics but in the societies and boards where colleagues come together: that is where the guidelines are written, where the training programmes are established, and where solutions specific to our country are discussed. For this reason, in the national and international societies of my specialty I take care to go beyond mere membership and to take on active roles; in the field of aortic diseases in particular, I serve on the executive committee of the working group of the Turkish Society of Cardiovascular Surgery and on the national scientific board of the domestic aortic endograft development project.
