The Process After Laser Varicose Vein Treatment (EVLA)
I have addressed in detail in a separate article what EVLA is and how it is performed; in this article I focus directly on the post-procedure period and on what you will experience from the first days through to full recovery.
How Is Endovenous Laser Ablation Performed?
To recall it briefly, in EVLA we close the refluxing vein from the inside with controlled heat, using a thin laser fibre that we place inside the vein under ultrasound guidance; the procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia and does not require a hospital stay.
Its Advantages Over Classic Varicose Vein Surgery
The post-procedure period is far more comfortable than with classic surgery: because there is no incision or suture, the level of pain is low, and the patient can walk home 30-60 minutes after the procedure. In the first few days a mild sensation of tightness, bruising or firmness in the leg is normal and is easily controlled with the prescribed painkillers.
Bruising and Swelling After the Procedure
Mild bruising and swelling that can last from a few days to a few weeks may be seen along the line of the treated vein; this is a natural part of the vein’s closure process and recedes on its own over time. The compression stocking we recommend for the first 1-2 weeks both reduces swelling and speeds up recovery. Apart from heavy exercise and standing for long periods, you can return to your daily activities immediately; with the follow-up Doppler ultrasound we perform 1 week after the procedure, we confirm that the vein has closed successfully.
Frequently Asked Questions
When can I shower after the procedure? We usually allow showering the next day; we recommend that you avoid rubbing the entry site.
Is bruising normal, and when does it go away? Yes, mild bruising is an expected finding and usually disappears on its own within 1-3 weeks.
When can I do sport? You can start light walking immediately; for heavy exercise we recommend waiting 1-2 weeks.
Conclusion
The recovery process after EVLA is far faster and more comfortable than after classic varicose vein surgery. Using the compression stocking and attending follow-up examinations regularly are the most important parts of achieving a lasting and reliable result.
You can book an appointment for whatever you would like to know about your recovery process after EVLA.
