Nutrition in Heart and Vascular Patients

How Should Heart and Vascular Patients Eat?

Nutrition plays a decisive role both in the development and in the course of cardiovascular diseases. In this article I will describe our general nutritional approach for our heart and vascular patients.

Nutritional Principles That Support Vascular Health

A dietary pattern based mainly on vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts and olive oil (the Mediterranean-type diet) improves the cholesterol profile and reduces the inflammatory process in the vessel wall. Fish, especially the species rich in omega-3 fatty acids, is a protein source we recommend consuming at least twice a week.

Avoiding Salt, Sugar and Processed Foods

The hidden salt in processed meat products, instant soups and packaged snacks raises blood pressure and places an extra burden on the heart; added sugar, meanwhile, increases the risk of weight gain and diabetes and thus indirectly harms vascular health. We recommend that you reduce your consumption of these products and give priority to fresh, home-cooked food.

Vessel-Friendly and Harmful Fats

While the monounsaturated fats in olive oil, avocado and nuts support vascular health, the saturated fats in red meat and full-fat dairy products and the trans fats in processed foods raise bad cholesterol (LDL) and accelerate hardening of the arteries. In fat consumption, choosing the right type matters more than the amount and is decisive for long-term vascular health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this dietary pattern apply only to those who have had surgery? No; it applies to everyone who wants both to prevent disease and to slow the progression of existing cardiovascular disease.

Can I benefit from this diet even without losing weight? Yes; the quality of the diet itself contributes directly to vascular health, independently of any change in weight.

Should I make all these changes at once? No; gradual and sustainable changes are more successful in becoming lasting habits over the long term.

Conclusion

In heart and vascular patients, nutrition is a component of treatment as valuable as medication. The principles of Mediterranean-type eating form the scientifically most solid basis for supporting vascular health.
